Alum

Alum was traditionally used in France as a treatment for chilblains on the hands. A small piece was taken and melted in enough hot water to cover the hands.

After the alum was melted, the chilblain-sufferer put in or her hands in the liquid and covered the hands with gloves. These were to be kept on all night and as long as possible during the day.

Alum was also used to alleviate the effects of excessive perspiration.
