Lack of Appetite

One traditional remedy for lack of appetite involved making a drink from a handful of hops and caraway seeds. This was particularly recommended for loss of appetite following a debilitating illness.

Watercress and angelica were also thought to stimulate the appetite, as was barley. Carrots, too, were thought to encourage people to eat.

Herbs that were considered to be appetite stimulants included chamomile, lavender, sage thyme, tarragon, marjoram, yarrow, hawthorn, myrrh, centaury, gentian, hops and wormwood. Horseradish was also used to encourage people to eat.
